A few years ago I came up with this concept for RUN 412 based off of the RUN DMC logo. It has been a succesfull venture between me and Paul Dang (DJ MAD BUDDHA). For quite some time, all that was available were T-Shirts. The sweatshirt and zip-up hoodie were recently unveiled. I am in the process of putting together a short promo for the piece, and this (below) is a still from the piece. The first film/documentary done about Pittsburgh Hip hop was done by me back in 2000. My group HI-LOW was making some noise and to be honest it was just the fam getting it in...ME, T-note, U-turn (Yusef) and Chenits (tomorrow aka Chen-Low). The funny thing about it is that we were doing a ton of shows, no records out, no deal,no manager just on the road having fun doing what we love to do. This documentary had it's debut at the Andy Warhol museum and was eventually put out on VHS...(yes I said VHS). It was all grind all the time. I never uploaded it for several reasons, but my homeboy Will from High Impact Designs uploaded it, so I thought I would share it. It's not the best copy in the world, and it was basically me with a camera taping me and my people's shows. Like I said I focuse don our squad HI-LOW but had to give love to other cats from the 412, such as J.Sands, Strict flow, RXC, ROOK and BISHOP ect....(also look out for cameos from Mos Def and Kweli)There is even some footage from Rust college in there. So 2012 is upon us (soon) with that comes my ultra update before the new year.In the next few days I will upload footage from the CLASSIC MATERIAL WU-TANG edition...dope party if you missed it then you can finally see a few shots from it, I will also have some video pieces from several other events I was involved in this year as well as the party of the year "My 40th bday event." I got my degree from Rust back in 1995 and this was my first time going back to the campus during founder's week. To put it in perspective I have been back on several occasions (3 times this year alone), but this was my first time back during that weekend. I will never miss another one. I do believe that the years I went to Rust (and a few years before and after) can never be duplicated again. I am going to debut the film here on my blog (for free) and will continue to drop previews of the film in weeks to come.

Went back to Rust College this past weekend.....look out for the mini documentary that will be up online within 48 hours. Right now watching Heavy D's funeral online.......I remember the first time I saw Mr. Big Stuff music video, T-Note bought the video tape over and my mom even was feeling it. I saw Heavy D live back in the day and he put on a good show. This was about a week before Trouble T-Roy (one of his dancers) died. I remember after the concert tripping because I saw T-Roy talking to this girl I wanted to holla at in high school down at the "O".....I was like damn.

Elzhi and Skyzoo performed at the Shadow lounge on Aug 26th as part of the "OUTDOOR MUSIC SERIES". Elzhi performed with a live band put together by James (armstead) Brown. They had barely any time to rehearse and they killed it. I shot Elzhi's entire performance, will post a short clip very soon. Trying to touch up the audio before I do.

Diamond D live at the shadow lounge

We brought the legendary Diamond D to Pittsburgh this past July. Diamond D is one of my favorite producers of all time and he turned out to be good peoples as well. We shot so much footage, but one of my SD cards got corrupted and I lost a ton of footage. The worst part of it is that the footage I lost was of me and Diamond D digging for records at Jerry's records. As a dj and producer that moment was beyond surreal. We went threw tons of boxes of 45's and Diamond was pulling out banger after banger. I'm sick that the footage is lost, but in this piece we talked about it. Diamond did his thing on the tables that night, I even made my set extra short just so everyone else could get their time in. On a side note...we made it to Smi's crib and Diamond blessed us with some exclusive joints...was a dope weekend overall.Footage was shot with the GH1 and I used the kit lens because my 50mm came up missing a week or two before hand.I apologize for the shaky camera movement during the performance, but I was too busy enjoying the night , to be worried about Pristine filming techniques lol

We got Diamond D (D.I.T.C) Spinning at Classic Material on July 16th. This has all the makings of being the best party of the year. Me (Dj Big Phill), Selectah, and SMI will be spinning....the Varsity Squad will Perform a set and T-NOTE will be the host for the evening....this is going to be serious. Me and T-NOTE gonna have something special setup for that evening....gonna be really dope. As you all know, Classic Material will have guest DJ's/MC's from time to time, and when DiamonD D's name came up.....I called J.Rawls. Being that Diamond is on Rawls record, Rawls is my people....I hit up Rawls and he made the connect. To be honest, without J.Rawls involvement, this may not have taken place. Me an Diamond went over the particulars of the event and here it is.

We will be recording this show and this is going to be that one party that if you miss it.....well you just missed it.

Apple releases new version of final cut...but

Apple released a new version of final cut pro, and called it Final cut X. The last version of final cut pro is titled final cut 7 (they skipped 8 and 9?). Usually this would be welcomed addition to my editing tools, the only problem is that they dumbed down the program. They have taken out almost all the features that make it a "PRO" editing program. It is basically iMovie HD. There were so many complaint on the Apple website that they shit down the comments section for the APP (btw it can only be downloaded via the app store?) and have issued refunds. I think apple has lost touched with what made Apple special to start with. I can bet that this app will find its way on the Ipad somehow (hence the small amount of space it takes up) and will be able to be uploaded and worked on via the new apple "Cloud" system.

Conan O' Brian did a skit on his show about the new software, which pretty much sums up how most of us professionals feel about the software......check it out

MIKE EPPS AND DEAD PREZ piece (finally done)

These two pieces have been changed soooo many times in the past month....these are the final versions I did.

Dead Prez killed it (as to be expected) and I have seen them perform a couple of times before, but this performance was really dope. The interview went well besides for a few mic problems, but being that we had two cameras rolling I was able to use the internal mic from the Gh1 and use that audio. The audio is low at some points, but that was the best that could be done to salvage it. That night Smi and Jasiri X performed and almost everyone from the local hip hop community was in attendance as well as my OG Paradise Grey (of X-clan)

The Mike Epps show was dope as well, Dougie Fresh came through as well as Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and actor Ving Rhames. Mike Epps cut up the entire time, and Buckwild (the host) was real good peoples.

I edited this piece for Ryhme Calisthenics (a hip hop gameshow). I only shot the footage from00:52-00:56 and 2:04 until the end of the piece. The footage I shot was shot in 1080p, and on the Gh1. My shots took place in Pittsburgh,New York and DC. They compiled some shots that they wanted in the sizzler and I compiled them they wanted them into the piece. From 2:04 on I had complete control and used only my footage for maximum effect.

The shots I got with this lens (with the GH1) were beyond ill. I am praying that I just misplaced it around the house.....but I am about 85% sure that, thats not the case. Looks like I will be going the Ebay route.

First and foremost, had a meeting with the "Varsity Squad" and though I would like to discuss the outcome of the meeting...lets just say that the near future is about to become really interesting.

The RyhmeCalistetics looks like its about to actually be picked up and get a tv show......(can't really talk about the really as well....for now). I don't think my involvement will be that big, but I am still happy that I was/am part of the reason why the tv show is going to actually see he light of day.

The actor Lamman Rucker (a Pittsburgh native) stopped by my after school program at Westinghouse earlier this week and briefly chilled and took pics with the my students.

Tonight is of course "Classic Material" at the Shadow lounge....the reggae edition...gonna be live. I am not Djing this one...but me and T-Note will semi-host the event. Not really feeling the flyer for this edition (hate to say it), but Classic Material is about the best event every Month...and I will be Spinning at the next one.

Been a hectic month (to say the least) I think I have edited more video/film this past few weeks than I have in quite some time. The good thing about that is (of course) the money, the bad thing is...the time. I haven't uploaded any new video in ages, partially because most of the pieces I have worked on, were/are for clients. By the end of this week (yes another promise) I will be adding bunch of new videos, music and pics.

Looking at hopefully renting a floor at this building in Mckeesport to have a physical space to do my work, I will also probably be looking to hire people to assist with what is looking to be a busy summer. I could talk all day about why the new 720 records and cafe is the place to be, but I would rather let the footage speak for itself. This piece was shot with the gh1(13) and a canon 50mm FD lens. There are several cameos in this piece, ranging from dj Buscrates, Shamir, all the way to the Legendary DJ Hank D. The most important cameo is my son, Little Phill.

All shots handheld, no tripods,monopods ect....just had the camera on me and started shooting.

TIME LAPSE

For those not familar with what a time lapse is...basically....hundreds to thousands of still pics taken over a extended period of time. These pics are then layered one after another to create video, basically its the same principle as doing "hand drawn" animation...but with still images. This is my second attempt and I think it turned out really well. Shot on the GH1 on a cold Pittsburgh night. I used a canon fd 50mm 1.4 lens and the Kit lens, was going to use the 28mm but decided against it (plus it was getting cold). The track is for a joint that was never finished, so I used it on this.

I will be dropping a ton of media before 2010 is a thing of the past.....trust me.

Looking ahead to 2011

In all honesty 2010 was a productive year, but not as good as I would have liked. I am not complaining because I am sure I did better than most. In 2011, we are going to focus mainly on our own projects. I can't even start to tell you how many potential clients cancelled at the last minute and (or) wanted hook-ups. The best clients (of course) have been non Hip-Hop/music related. I hate to make a statement like that, but the truth is the truth. Everyone wants a video, but no one wants to pay the bill. It would be wrong for me to put these cats on blast, but then again it wouldn't. Enough of the negative, now to the positive. Before 2011 hits I w/upload most of the stuff we were sitting on or were unable to do so for various reasons. I have a few music videos in the vaults (yet to be released), as well as a few short films etc. The record will not drop in 2010, but early 2011....(but I will drop something before the end of the new year....I think). Below are some screen captures from a shoot with J.sands and a shoot for Rhyme Cal, featuring Elzhi.

I haven't done a update on my site in a few weeks, becuase I have been ultra busy. Trying to finish this record up by the end of this year.....yes the end of this year. Got several film projects to finish....by the end of this year. I really want to end 2010 with a bang. Putting the finishing touches on "Always Official", which is a 412 posse cut. By the end of the week, the behind the scenes (from the session) will be up. I have done several Timelapse projects on the GH1, but not sure if I want to post them by themselves, or as part of a bigger project.....only time will tell.

The first version of this was a little too involved and decided to make it as simple as possible. "Always official" behind the scenes shoot at BLB studios

I had a few people come through for a session at BLB studios. This song was supposed to be recorded over a month ago, but with so many people on the joint had to accommodate every ones schedule. Some people sent in verses via the net, and a few couldn't make it on that day as well. The reason why I wanted (almost) everyone present during the session, was so that they could feed off of each other and that I could actually "produce" the track instead of just having people do their verse over the beat I made some time ago. The session was a success, was actually able to start two songs, as well as build with everyone involved. Dj Huggy and Deizel were both engineering the session and me and T-note had the cameras and lights going. Some of us did double duty that day I was in control of the session as well as filming and taking pics and T-note did his verse and kept the cameras going as well. Video coming soon, until then here are a few screen grabs (clips from the video).....all of the pics listed before were stills taken from video, everyone besides for the one taken of Huggy and Deizel. I dumped the Video into the mac...then did my "magic" on them...(on a side note....if you use these pics the only thing I ask is that you give us our proper credit.)

The video is done and here it is. This video features Marcielago as well as Kizzy and Hollyhood. Me and Tone shot this in 3 different locations. Marcy had a vision and it was up to us to make sure the vision came out right on film. I tested out a few different effects and color variations, and I think we went with the best ones. The piece was shot on the 7d and the Gh1....we didn't set up seperate lights for the GH1 (which we should have)..but we had enough footage from the 7d (and then some). Ran into a few problems editing the video, but was able to get through it as usual.

I shot this at the shadow lounge some time ago.....instead of going for the usual djing/club clips ect...I went for the personal approach. Everyone involved is more like family than friends, so I went with that aspect. I also didn't realize that House shoes was coming back in this Friday, I did talk to him earlier this week on the phone and he said he was going to be coming through on "some last minute type ish"...but didn't realize he meant this friday.

Got a quick shoot today, should be interesting. J.Malls finished the new logo (title) last night, as you can see at the top of the blog. At some point I am going to animate the elements in the psd and use the logo in my films. Almost finished editing another music video, and will have a link to it on my blog once its finished. Just have to add the b-roll and some other elements that the client wants. Testing out some different looks for the video and hope to have it wrapped up in a day or two. Had a (semi) meeting about another short film project...wish I was at liberty to discuss it....but thats not the case. Busy weekend ahead....

This Sunday have another video shoot, all female hip hop collaboration. Should be interesting to say the least.

Working on what I would like to think of as the ultimate Posse cut. The Beat has been sent out and everyone involved is loving the track....so far we have Beedie, J.sands (speaking of sands he just sent me a ultra-hot new joint), Boka, Charon Don and of course the Hi-Low fam: U-turn and T-note. Going to film the ENTIRE process from start to finish going to use 3 cameras at a time. I really wanted to make sure that people respect and understand the process......we are not making disposable music.

James Scoglietti Big Phill has been bugging me for years to track down reissues of some classic blaxploitation records via one of my distributors. Admittedly, I've lallygagged, and it's been a bit of a recurring joke every time we cross paths. So, when Phil approached SMI about doing a blaxploitation night at CM, I couldn't refuse. Blaxploitation movies have provided the backdrop for many a classic hip-hop track. If it wasn't for James Brown's contribution to the Black Caesar soundtrack "Blind Man Can See It", we would be stuck with the wack remix of "They Want EFX", not the the ill guitar loop that still drives folks bananas to this day. And who can forgot about Marvin Gaye lending "A Touch Of Jazz" to Jeff & The Fresh Prince courtesy of "T Plays It Cool" from the all Marvin "Trouble Man" soundtrack.

Blaxploitation flix's have provided countless hours of visual and audible entertainment over the years, tonight we will honor the best of the genre, complete with the hip-hop artists that freaked the samples + film clips on the big screen all night! Phil is a master at this genre, come check out the collection he has amassed over the years, alongside residents Selecta and SMI. Thanks for keeping Classic Material fresh and exciting as we move in to our fourth year of amazing parties. Next month Mr. Murray will be in the place to be for the "Most Beautifullest" edition of CM. Cheers!

Pittsburgh Black Family Reunion 2010

I was contracted to take pics this year at the event. I took over 1400 pics (not sure if I really needed to go that hard...) Here are just a few random (performance) pics from the event.....R&B star Bobby Valentino was the headliner for this family event. It was held at Schenly park....and it is a huge park. the event had vendors, activities for the kids, workshops as well as musical performances. My only issue is that you can feel the effect of not having a Black/urban radio station anymore. While this event drew a ton of people, there should have been a lot more. The key here is: w/o the proper advertising it is nearly impossible to get the message to the people. Print and web media is a part of the picture, but this is the area in which black radio shines, and has a leg-up on everybody. Of course once Bobby Valentino hit the stage there were massive amount of people at the stage area....all in all a good event.

By the end of this week going to give a update on the short film....may finally have the cast in place. Going through songs that will be on the record....reconnected with Hank Dolo (who moved back down south....long story). Me and this brotha have about 4 songs finished....and they are right. Trying to get 2-3 artist that I really respect to participate on the project (one of whom I have already worked with). And of course a HI-LOW semi-reunion joint (or two). Going to be something special.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure to experience a Eric Roberson live show/concert. My fam "Smi" was spinning and he he informed that the show was changed (at the last minute) from being a free joint outside to another venue. All that week we had been having bad "sudden" rain storms...so I suppose it was a precaution. I will say this, this was one of the best shows I have ever been to.....and I have been to a lot as well have been a part of many as well. E. Roberson is by far the best song writer in modern R&B/soul/neo-soul ect.. for at least the last couple of years.....hands down...no competition. If you disagree.....then I am scared of what your record collection actually looks like lol. This cat is independent and still got nominated for a Grammy...Do yourself a favor.....google this brotha, you won't be disappointed.

Anyway...I took my oldest daughter and my son with me....I felt like this was a show they needed to witness, so they have something to compare all this other nonsense to. Now, my kids know and love music an they can recognize whats real. My son already was a fan, being that one of his favorite joints was "pen just cries away" off of his "left" CD..and my son is only 10.

I had the GH1 with me...and was able to film the entire show...in 1080p 24fps..and it looks amazing. I will be honest, it wasn't my most steadiest shoot (no tri-pod..all hand held)..and being that I was hype...didn't help either. I did catch myself from time to time, and attempted to shoot as technical as possible ..but I was caught up in the spirit of the show....at some point I will try and edit it (possibly)...I do want to go head and let Eric Roberson get this footage, so I will try and make that happen soon. Of course I am going to try and get him on my record.....even if its just on a interlude...need that on my project.

Also...met his pops and he is one of the coolest cats I met in a long time.....

Me and T-Note shot a video for Marcielago, the song is entitled "Teapot". The shoot went well, and most of the shots took place out doors. She had a vision she wanted, and I think we did a good job of delivering her vision. We used the Canon 7d and the GH1 (with the new firmware hack). Below is a screen grab straight out the camera from the 7d footage..and following is the same screen grab after it has been touched up by me. I did some color correction and did my own "magic" on the effect/look. Not sure if this is the look we are going to go for on the video...but it looks good to me. And that is a real bonfire in the background.

House shoes finally made it to the 412 and he killed it. I didn't know he was coming to the shadow until the night before (via SMI) and was scrambling to find his cell number (in a old phone probably) to hit him...but saddely my cell is now R.I.P. When he came through he didn't recognize me w/the beard at first..but only took a minute to remake the connection.

When I say he killed it, he killed it. Wish there were more people there that night (was a last minute gig) but for those there it was ill. Of course he banged plenty of dilla joints w/the originals..but my thing was that he just kept it going non-stop. Gots to have him come through again...for one of my joints.

Battle for the Arts!!!

Me and Dj Mad Buddha (P.Dang) spun at the Battle for the arts event, a week or so ago. We also spun at the very first one that was held. Check out some video from the event (which I put together)...as well as a few pics. Video was shot with the GH1, paul shot a few of the scenes in it (primarily the ones with me on the tables)...Dj Grand came out and shot some footage with the 7d..but I haven't got the footage as of yet...so didn't use it. I edited on FCP and shot without any additional lights....besides for a the "birdseye view"...used a light source I had w/me. The Beat is something I had sitting for awhile, but will be on another project of mine.....trust me, the record is coming.

Was in Chicago a few weeks ago shooting inside of "Dusty Grooves record store" in Chicago. Had my kids digging for records and we came up with a few gems. Almost bought an original copy of "Willie Dynamite" but didn't know if spending $100 on one record at that point in time was the right move. The re-issue goes for only $12-$15..tough decision. All in all "dusty grooves" is one of my favorite spots.

Finally working with Joe Money aka Usef Dinero on a video project. We have both been trying to do this for some time, sat down last week and got the initial footage. This upcoming week I w/most likely wrap up the Joe money shoot and move on to my mini-documentary with artist Mike Walsh. Still in Negotiations w/Ron Noodles about his upcoming Music video...so we shall see what happens.

LOST IT ALL (almost)

Not too long ago (one of) my external hard drive crashed. This resulted in me losing almost all the beats I made over the past 3 or so years (this drive was my back-up). I almost lost all my pics nd a ton of film/video taken as well. I was able to recover most of it, but none of the names (of the files) are the same. So for instance; beats that were made on reason are done, becuase I can't link the files to "generic" named samples/audio ect. So this has put me back, on finishing my record. If nothing else this has motivated me in a strange way. In good news got my new cam I was looking foward to, so I have another weapon in the arsenal. In the next month or so I am going to bombard my Vimeo acct with short films...and I am actually looking to shoot some major/indie artist video projects (again) in the near future.

All footage was shot with either the Canon 7D or the HVX 200A. The light kits we had were sick, and helped out a lot on the shoot. Going to VA this weekend with T-Note to shoot a video for Champain Era. Will probably be shooting with the HVX and the Canon 7d. Video takes place in three different locations (I think) so it should be an interesting shoot to say the least. If you are not familiar with him check out this video....actually T-note did this a year or so ago, and I was pissed at him cuz he slipped some of my beats in the footage without asking, but T-note is my dude so he gets a free pass....but only one free pass.

The GOOD and The BAD

I spun at Kelly's last night....to make a long story short, someone busted out the passenger side window (of my new whip) and stole my GPS. To say the least I was very pi**ed. The last thing I wanted to do was pay for a new window on a new car.

On a positive note, I got some sketches from BIZ20 and the artwork is coming along very well. We are looking for the record to be finished in December and hope for a January release.

New record in the works (on wax). should be ready in two months..in conjuction with that there will be a cd/digital download that will contain more material. The wax will probably only have 6 tracks.
The reason why we are going with only 6 joints is so that the audio doesn't suffer. The cd/digital download will contain possibly 10 joints all together as well as video for a few of the joints. Most of the tracks will be instrumentals. This record is going to be phenomina, not just becuase its my project, but becuase I am putting my all into it. The artwork is going to be top notch, and its not just going to be a bunch of random music thrown together. As soon as more of the pieces of the puzzle are available, I will present them on this blog.

I told him that though the artwork was fine, it doesn't stand out amongst everyother record in your average record store. I bought one, but I was going to buy one regardless....looking forward to a full length.

Pick up this months copy of SMOOTH magazine, they have a piece on Blitz. If you don't know who he is by now, then your late to the party. I produced a track on his last record and I suppose I need to post a link to that soon. Blitz is nice on the mic and quiet as kept a beast on the artwork as well.....

It would be a crime if I didn't mention that the last time I saw Blitz was at a event I had, and which he was the special guest. The event was a release party for the late great J.DILLA (formely of Slum Village).......speaking of slum, tomorrow I am shooting a video for "Smi", and the track for this particular song was produced by Daru (he is back in town for a few)....also Daru plays drums for Slum Village. With Baatin passing yesterday it just is ironic how much of this related.

Baatin from slum village passed away yesterday, he will be missed. Seems like Detroit hip hop just can't get a break. I didn't get a chance to meet baatin when I filmed Slum Village a year or so ago, becuase he was out the group at that time. He had been back on tour with the group as of late, so it looks like things were going back to the way they used to be. He was an "original" member of slum village as was, the great J.DILLA. (R.I.P)

Shot a video for the song I produced on BZE's record. Big worm bought the HD-cam out and we shot at the TIMEBOMB and at the shadow lounge. This was also the day me and Paul debute the "RUN 412" t-shirts, so it was a eventfull evening. I almost forgot to mention that pete rock was spinning at the shadow that night as well.....of course I got it on film.

Bze new cd is out and I produced track number 11 on the cd: "Never fall off". Wasn't actually there for the session, just gave him a beat cd, and there it is. I will post the cd cover and a snippet of the track soon.....Forgot to mention shooting video for the song on sat. Ill be at the Timebomb (shadyside) spinning from 1-3 pm (BAR B QUE jump off) and got a booth at the Pete-Rock show (with my business partner PAul Dang)....did I mention the new shirts we came up with is crazy.

Right now I am debating on wether or not to get rid of my trusty G5 and get a Macbook Pro, there are pros and cons for both, but I got to make a decision. I am also finally (hopefully) getting in the position to purchase a new camera. I am interested in the new SLR's that shoot HD-Video ( I do believe that this is the future of film making) though nothing will take the place of shooting on film.....these cameras are still ill. There is the Canon 5d and the Panasonic Luminix GH-1....I am personally leaning towards the GH-1... Here is a pic of the cam and some footage shot with the gh-1

These two sites are actually well put together, and you will want to spend some time on those two websites.
